Email Basics

E-mails are messages between users, and can be used within a browser (Web-based mail) or with a separate application (Outlook Express).

The "File" button give you the option to create new messages, new folders, and add new contacts. You can also "Open" a message; save a message using "Save As"; "Import" messages and contacts from other programs or back-ups; "Export" your messages and contacts to another program; create "Identities" for multiple email accounts and "Switch" between these identities; and "Exit" the program all under the first tab labeled "File".

The "Edit" button allows you to "Select" text within an email and "Copy" it to another email or text document; "Delete" the text or selected email; "Move" the selected email to another folder; and "Mark As Read" any email in your Inbox.

The "View" button allows you to change the "Current View" as well as "Sort" the emails by date, time, etc. You can also change the "Layout" you see (the tool bar, folder listings, etc.).

The "Tools" button allows you to "Send & Receive" your email; open your "Address Book"; create "Message Rules" for incoming mail (can help eliminate some annoying email/spamm); view your "Account" settings; and change your email "Options" (security features, maintenance features, signatures, and stationary options).

The "Message" button allows you to "Create" new messages, "Block Senders" of messages, "Create Message Rules" for sending and receiving messages, and "Flag Messages" of importance.

The "Help" button is a standard help feature included by Microsoft to answer questions and explain features to you.

The "Toolbar" below the main header toolbar contains the shortcuts to most of the above mentioned features like "Create Mail", "Forward" a message, "Reply" to a message, "Print" a message, "Delete" a message, "Send & Receive" your email accounts, and "Address" book for your email contacts.
